Howard Hume (June 19, 1882 at "Warwick" in Alexandria County, Virginia – June 26, 1968)[1][2] was a member of the Virginia Glee Club during the Glee Club 1904-1905 season. While at the University he was a member of Beta Theta Pi, Nu Sigma Nu, and Eli Banana. He was the brother of Glee Club member John Edmund Norris Hume, and his father, Frank Hume, was a Civil War veteran, grocer, whiskey producer, and donor to the University of Virginia who is memorialized in the Hume Memorial Wall and Fountain.[3]

He passed his board examinations in 1909 and was commissioned in the Medical Reserve Corps of the United States Army. He practiced medicine in Washington D.C.. He enlisted in 1917 and served in World War I as a surgeon attached to the British Army in England and France. In 1923 he was the Chief Surgical Service at Camp Meade, Maryland, then served from 1925 to 1929 as the chief surgeon at the Army Navy General Hospital of Hot Springs, Arkansas, then held the same post until 1932 in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He served as chief surgeon in the Army Hospital on Corregidor Island in the Philippines from 1932-1934, when he was assigned to Fort Meade. He commanded several hospitals in the United States South during World War II.[2]
