Robert Gilliam Butcher (February 18, 1895 in Petersburg, Virginia – July 1956)[1][2] was president of the Virginia Glee Club during the 1916-1917 season and vice president in 1919-1920.

Butcher enrolled in the University in 1912, where he took two years of academic work and two of law. In addition to his membership in the Glee Club, Butcher was a member of T.I.L.K.A.,Phi Delta Theta, the Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity, the Lamda Pi academic fraternity, and was the Clubs editor of Corks and Curls.[3]

While a law student, Butcher joined the Naval Reserve in 1917, and graduated the officers' training program. In 1918 he participated in the Aisne-Marne offensive as a second lieutenant, and was shot through the arm and lung. Recuperating, he served as a member of a demonstration battalion until his honorable discharge in August 1919.

He then returned to the University, and the Glee Club, and graduated as a bachelor of law in 1920. Upon graduation, he joined the Richmond law firm of Parrish, Butcher & Churchman. His son, Robert G. Butcher, Jr., served on the Board of Visitors of the University in the late 1980s and 1990s.
